Escape should exit the preferences window, just as if you clicked the cancel button. 

You may wish to prompt the user in case anything changed, but that's optional. Some casual users may expect it (if you're hoping to attract users from web-based interfaces, they may appreciate it) but as far as I'm concerned, normally it would be exit-and-lose-all-my-changes-I-mean-it.
